In variable data printing, colored text on a colored background may no longer readable when the colors change or the text overflows. A high dynamic range photograph may require a large gamut mapping operation. These are examples where color matching and colorimetry are not adequate and a lexical color metric is more appropriate. We report on an experiment in progress to build a color name thesaurus. In particular, since lexical color is an acquired skill varying substantially from observer to observer, we present techniques we developed to increase robustness External Posting Date: June 21, 2009 [Fulltext] Approved for External Publication Internal Posting Date: June 21, 2009 [Fulltext] To be published and presented at 11th Congress of the International Colour Association (AIC) 2009, Sydney, Australia, September 27th to October 2nd 2009. Categorical facilitation with equally discriminable colors.

This study investigates the impact of language on color perception. By categorical facilitation, we refer to an aspect of categorical perception, in which the linguistic distinction between categories affects color discrimination beyond the low-level, sensory sensitivity to color differences. According to this idea, discrimination performance for colors that cross a category border should be be...

Population Code Dynamics in Categorical Perception

Categorical perception is a ubiquitous function in sensory information processing, and is reported to have important influences on the recognition of presented and/or memorized stimuli. However, such complex interactions among categorical perception and other aspects of sensory processing have not been explained well in a unified manner. Here, we propose a recurrent neural network model to proc...

Categorical perception for red and brown.

Recent studies suggest that the widely accepted evidence in support of categorical perception of color may be a confound of effects due to low-level sensory mechanisms that are unrelated to color categories. To reveal genuine category effects, we investigated the category boundary least prone to spurious effects of low-level mechanisms: the boundary between red and brown. We tested for low-leve...

Acquisition of categorical color perception: a perceptual learning approach to the linguistic relativity hypothesis.

Color perception can be categorical: Between-category discriminations are more accurate than equivalent within-category discriminations. The effects could be inherited, learned, or both. The authors provide evidence that supports the possibility of learned categorical perception (CP). Experiment 1 demonstrated that observers' color discrimination is flexible and improves through repeated practi...

Categorical sensitivity to color differences.

Categorical perception provides a potential link between color perception and the linguistic categories that correspond to the basic color terms. We examined whether the sensory information of the second-stage chromatic mechanisms is further processed so that sensitivity for color differences yields categorical perception. In this case, sensitivity for color differences should be higher across ...
